The great tension of the series is that Temeraire is a dragon-revolutionary, who is opposed (by force of circumstance) to Napoleon - a figure with whom he shares much in common, ideologically. For Novik, the main scope of the Temeraire series is to explore the political and cultural implications of a world populated by intelligent dragons - and this exploration provides a fascinating backdrop to the adventures of Laurence and Temeraire. While I’d hoped for a similar military history angle, Temeraire goes in quite a different direction. These novels follow soldier Richard Sharpe through the various battles of the Napoleonic Wars and see him rise among the ranks of the British Army. The Sharpe books were favourites of mine when I was younger. I’ll admit that when I picked up Temeraire, I was expecting (and half-hoping) for something similar to Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe series. This series, as much as any other, looks to be the inspiration behind the Disney+ show.īuy She-Hulk by Dan Slott: The Complete Collection Vol. Slott's She-Hulk has become the standard by which all subsequent books are judged. It brings Jen Walters back into the forefront alongside her Hulk persona, and also establishes a top-notch supporting cast. This series is frequently hilarious, but it packs plenty of heart, as well. For instance, the series establishes that a version of Marvel Comics exists within the Marvel Universe, and all their comics are 100% factual accounts of real-life incidents. Slott's She-Hulk isn't as overtly meta as Byrne's Sensational She-Hulk, but it does mine the depths of Marvel lore for both comedic and dramatic effect. Jonah Jameson for libel, there's only one lawyer to call. Slott's She-Hulk run sees Jen Walters take a role at the prestigious law firm Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg, & Holliway, where she brings her unique perspective to matters of superhuman law. If Byrne fundamentally overhauled She-Hulk's personality and place in the Marvel Universe, then Dan Slott brought her into the 21st Century. I don’t know that we do, but she plays games just as well as Hudson used to, at the downfall of Alayna. I feel like what i had expected from Celia begins to come true, she’s just very un-trustworthy and i feel like she’s got her own motivation. Hoping for insight from someone who understands all sides of the story, Alayna forms a bond with Celia that goes too far-revealing things about Hudson that could end their love for good.
